Acid Reflux Disease May Increase Risk of Cancers of Larynx and Esophagus
Results from a large prospective study indicate that gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which also causes heartburn symptoms, is linked with higher risks of various cancers of the larynx (or voice box) and esophagus. The study is published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society.
GERD, a gastrointestinal disorder that affects approximately 20 percent of U.S. adults, occurs when stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, where it can cause tissue damage. Research indicates that this damage may put patients at risk of developing a type of cancer called esophageal adenocarcinoma. ....

Medicare Special Enrollment Period Ends Feb. 28 for Louisianians Affected by 2020 Weather-Related Disasters

Louisiana residents who were unable to enroll in a Medicare plan because of last year’s weather-related disasters will have until February 28 to enroll during the Special Enrollment Period (SEP).
To be eligible for the SEP, an individual must have been eligible to enroll in a Medicare plan but was unable to do so because of weather-related disasters in 2020.
The SEP is also available to people who weren’t affected but rely on friends or family for making healthcare decisions who were affected. ....

(BPT) - In the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic, many areas of the country banned nonessential medical procedures in an effort to slow the spread of the disease. As a result, many physicians saw fewer patients for routine medical care, such as physical exams and screenings. A recent survey by The Physicians Foundation polled 3,513 physicians and found 41% saw volume decreases of 26% or more in their practices.
The impact on cancer screenings was even more profound. For example, screenings for prostate cancer one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers in men in the United States dropped by 56% by the peak of the pandemic in April according to a recent study published in ....
